fortyfivedownstairs is one of Melbourne’s most renowned and multi-faceted creative hubs. As an unfunded and not-for-profit organisation we support independent, experimental and thought-provoking art forms, striving to make money for artists – not from them.
A unique multi-arts venue and cultural incubator, fortyfivedownstairs has been supporting independent, experimental and thought-provoking art forms since 2002. The organisation encourages the development of independent artists across the performing and visual arts and presents an annual music program traversing classical to jazz. Centrally located in an old rag-trade building in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the event space is a grungy and versatile warehouse that transforms with every show. Recent musical highlights from 2017 include a concert series presented in partnership with The Boîte and Adam Simmons’ Concerto for Piano and Toy Band from his The Usefulness of Art series.
